re: DPS vs Dmg Taken. . .?

So, I was poking around on the totals for various things on our attempts on the council, and the things I noticed were
- I was not super awesome dps. I don't feel TOO bad about this, as I don't have quite as good gear as a lot of the other raiders, however. . .
- I was dead last on damage taken.
My biggest problem is where to draw the line of taking hit(s) to pump out more dmg. I kinda treat anything I can avoid as being able to 1 shot me, plus I always feel healers should be using their mana to heal tanks.
So anyone have any suggestions, or do you think I might be ok once I get a little more gear (probably not top dps I'm sure, but better, and I avoid dmg like a beast!)?

There's a critical threshold of avoidable damage taken by the raid where people start dropping because the healers can't keep up, and we seem to hit that threshold fairly often when wiping (maybe 1/3 of the time). One person avoiding damage like a beast helps the raid stay under that threshold, so it helps! There are a few occasions where it's justifiable to eat some damage while increasing output, but if everything and everyone is executing perfectly those will be rare. Once everyone is sufficiently skilled at evading damage, we can start to swap out healers for dps.
It all comes with experience and practice!
